【Apr. 3】An International Symposium: Refiguring Ernest Hemingway in the 21 Century

As we are about to approach the 120th Anniversary of Ernest Hemingway, one of the greatest writers of 20th century, The American Literature Society at the University of Tsukuba and Institute for Comparative Research in Humanities and Social Research at the University of Tsukuba (ICR) will together host an international symposium to refigure Ernest Hemingway’s image and his art from the 21st century perspective. Through criticisms of the 1920s to the contemporary era, this symposium seeks to present a new imagery of the writer by a multi-faceted approach: portrait as a writer, ideology, media, and text.

We feel highly honored to have Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Rodenberg from Hamburg University present at our symposium a guest speaker. Prof. Rodenberg’s recent book, The Making of Ernest Hemingway: Celebrity, Photojournalism, and the Emergence of the Modern Lifestyle Media. Berlin: Lit Verlag, 2014, has reached wide critical attention in international Hemingway Studies. We will also have a presentation by Prof. Dr. Yoichiro Miyamoto from University of Tsukuba. Prof. Miyamoto’s work, “‘Papa’ and Fidel: Cold War, Cuba, and Two Interpretive Communities.” (Hemingway, Cuba, and the Cuban Works. Ed. Larry Grimes. Kent OH: Kent State U P, 2014. ) became an internationally acclaimed milestone in Hemingway Studies regarding the writer’s works during the Cuban era. Next, we proudly present Prof. Dr. Yukihiro Tsukada from Kwansei Gakuin University, and Assistant Prof. Eisuke Kawada from University of Tsukuba, who both have co-authoring book publications on Hemingway in Japan.

This meeting will adopt English as a lingua franca. Everybody is welcome who would like to contribute or attend. Please feel free to participate in our symposium.
